The 2020 Ford Explorer and 2020 Chevrolet Traverse are both midsize SUVs. Yet the two vehicles are vastly different on many levels. If you’ve been trying to decide which one is right for you, the information presented here will help you choose.
2020 Ford Explorer vs. 2020 Chevrolet Traverse
Both the Explorer and Traverse are available in a variety of trim levels. The Ford comes in XLT, Limited, ST and Platinum grades. Six versions of the Chevy are available: LS, LT, RS, True North, Premier and High Country.
The Explorer is completely redesigned for 2020. On the other hand, the Chevy is essentially a carryover.
Design
Trying to decide between the Explorer and Traverse on looks alone is nearly impossible. While each of the SUVs sports eye-catching body lines and exciting wheel options, the Ford is the most recently updated. Therefore, it’s arguably the most modern-looking of the two SUVs.
The competition gets more intense inside the cabin. Up to seven passengers can fit inside the Explorer; the Traverse has room for up to eight on select models.
But less seating means more room for Explorer passengers to spread out. In the Ford, front-row occupants get 1,093 mm of legroom, compared to 1,041 mm in the Chevy. Cargo volume behind the third-row seat is 651L in the Traverse and 516.4L in the Explorer.
Performance
When it comes to performance, the Explorer has the Traverse beat on nearly every level. The Ford offers a variety of engine options, including an EcoBoost turbocharged 2.3L four-cylinder (300 hp, 310 lb.-ft.), a 3.3L hybrid V6 and an EcoBoost turbocharged 3.0L V6 (365 hp, 380 lb.-ft. in the Platinum; 400 hp, 415 lb.-ft. in the ST). All engine choices pair with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel-drive comes standard and four-wheel-drive is available.
By comparison, all Traverse models come with a 3.6L V6 (310 hp, 266 lb.-ft.) paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel-drive comes standard and all-wheel-drive is available.
Key standard features
The Explorer and Traverse both come with a generous list of standard features. All versions of the Chevy get a 7-inch touchscreen display (with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), a rearview camera and onboard Wi-Fi.
Meanwhile, the Explorer turns things up a notch by offering many of the standard features mentioned above plus, the Ford Co-Pilot360 suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. Additional noteworthy standard equipment includes LED headlights, an 8-inch touchscreen display and more.
Which should you choose?
Choosing between the 2020 Ford Explorer and the 2020 Chevrolet Traverse shouldn’t be difficult when you think about it. The Explorer offers more standard features and a greater number of powertrain options than the Traverse.
