Continuously Controlled Damping
Potholes take a toll on tires, especially on Canadian roads. Ford engineers set to work to develop a solution for bent rims, damaged tires, and worn suspension. Continuously Controlled Damping (CCD) was the result.
Twelve sensors provide data to the CCD system which makes damping adjustments every two milliseconds. When a pothole is detected, CCD adjusts the dampers to their stiffest setting. The result? The wheel doesn’t fall as deep into the pothole, softening the impact on the other side of the divot. Sensors from the front wheel pre-warn the rear wheel’s dampers of the coming impact too. CCD has a much smoother ride than a standard suspension.
Blind Spot Information System
Ford is an early adopter of this driver-assist system that makes changing lanes safer. Blind Spot Information System detects vehicles in a driver’s blind spot while in traffic to reduce the instances of accidents and near misses. Combined with Cross-Traffic Alert that identifies traffic approaching from the side when reversing, it can save plenty of aggravation, damage, and even injury.
Radar modules in the rear quarter panels on either side detect when a vehicle enters the blind spot zone. On the side mirror, a warning light comes on when a vehicle is in the blind spot. The same radar modules are used for cross-traffic alert, identifying vehicles within a 45-foot range that are traveling at least 8km/h. Just like BLIS, a warning illuminates on the corresponding mirror, but an additional audible alert is heard and warning in the message center is displayed.
EV Technology
Ford is committed to electrifying much of its fleet and has plans to put 40 EV or hybrid models on the road within the next few years. The all-new Ford Mustang Mach-E is coming soon and re-introduces Ford into the EV marketplace.
The Mach-E SUV will have an estimated range of 425km and awesome acceleration in the 5-second range from electric motors that provide torque right from 0 RPM. An immense 15.5-inch infotainment screen and customizable digital instrument cluster along with Ford Co-Pilot360 technologies, not to mention available electric all-wheel-drive, will make the Mustang Mach-E a force to be reckoned with.
